Tips to Avoid Eviction

Your housing is your life-line, and it’s important to maintain it. Always pay your rent, mortgage, and utility bills on time if you’re able.

If you’re not able to pay due to your situation, seek help as soon as possible.

  • Don’t let your debt build up.
  • Your landlord, mortgage company, or utility provider may be less willing to work with you (or an agency) if you have neglected the bill for many months and owe a lot.

If you need help, try these three options:

  1. Dial 2-1-1. Tell the operator what you need, and he/she will bring up a list of resources in your area by city or zip code. Be prepared to write down names and phone numbers – you must contact the agencies yourself.
  2. Search the 2-1-1 website at www.ccgd.org/info/ – Click “Find Help Now” button, and search by zip code or city, or browse by category under Basic Needs.

Tips for Seeking Help with Rent, Mortgage, or Utility Bills:

  • Always call first – to be sure funds are available. Make an appointment, and find out where/when to go and what documents to bring with you.
  • Be patient! You may have to contact several agencies before you find one that can help.
  • Be prepared to pay part of your rent, mortgage, or utility bill – often there are limits on the amount of assistance.
  • Most programs will require a lease, mortgage, or utility bill to be in your name.
  • Most utility assistance programs can only help with electricity, gas, or water bills – not telephone, cable, or other bills.
  • Show up for your appointment on time (or call if you need to cancel).
